Chapter Eleven
âThat's Something, at least,â I said to Susan when she told me that Dickie had promised to get word to Fleur's father that we needed to talk to him.
Gemma scoffed. âThat's if he remembers.â
I smiled and nodded my head. Dickie hadn't seemed the reliable sort and certainly wasn't inclined to help when I was there. âI'm sorry I rushed to London. We all had our tasks to do, and I treated you like you were incapable of yours.â
Gemma reached over the table and squeezed my hand while Susan brushed away my apology with a wave of hers.
It was late in the afternoon, and we were sitting in the café updating each other on the day's events while enjoying a slice of cake and a cup of tea.
âWhat did I miss?â Drew asked after he returned from ordering a cheese toastie at the counter and plonked himself down at our table.
âWe were just filling Eira in on what happened in London,â Gemma confirmed before licking the cream from the top of her passion fruit and pistachio cupcake. Sam, her daughter, was busying herself behind the counter and had actually seemed a little worried that her mum was back to take over everything when we'd first walked through the door. She's desperate to make as much money as possible for her girl's trip to Ibiza next year and any work we can throw her way is more than welcome.
âI'm just glad you're back and you're safe,â I said as I toyed with my food.
Dickie's ring had been playing on my mind. He was no fan of witches. He'd made that perfectly clear. But his ring had been spelled to essentially 'detect magic' or at least the magical aura that a witch gives off. Only another witch could have made him that ring. I wanted to talk to Susan and Gemma about it, but with Drew here, it wasn't the right time. Instead, I kept things vague.
âIt pains me to say it,â I said, âbut the more I've learnt about Keith, the more I think his murder was connected to the warning phone call.â
âYou think someone wants to keep Fleur away from her father,â Drew stated and thanked Sam for the cheese toastie as she placed it in front of him and returned to her duties.
That was a good question. I mulled it over for a second before responding. âI do. Even if that means murdering people and seeing Fleur in prison.â
Drew nodded and took a bite, chewing and thinking at the same time. âThat doesn't make any sense to me,â he said after gulping down the remains of his bite. âIf someone is that desperate to keep Fleur and her father apart, then why not just kill one of them. I get that they might not know where Fleur's dad is, but they obviously know who Fleur's been talking to. Why not just kill her?â
That was another good question and one that I didn't have an answer to. Nothing made sense anymore.
